Dental groups ask Congress to support faculty loan repayment

The American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and American Dental Education Association are urging lawmakers to support legislation that would allow full-time educators participating in the Dental Faculty Loan Repayment Program to exclude from their federal income taxes the amount of the loan forgiveness received from this program.

Case Western Reserve University announced Nov. 19 that the Ralph T. and Esther L. Warburton Foundation pledged $3 million to establish endowed scholarships at three health sciences schools, including the university’s school of dental medicine.

The scholarships are intended for students from Stark and Summit counties, in an effort to educating future health care providers in Northeast Ohio hospitals. The scholarships are intended for students from middle-income families who wouldn’t qualify for need-based financial aid, yet don’t have other family resources to cover tuition, according to the university.

Dental School enrollment Women on the rise

In 2018-2019, for the first time in history, female students made up more than half of enrolled students for all four years in US dental schools, according to ADA Health Policy Institute:  49.2% male, 50.5% female (0.2% other/unknown)

This is an interesting development because in Germany, for example, this trend was already visible since 2006/2007: 60% female and 40% male.

In 2018/2019 this relation was 65% female to 35% male students.

However, this doesn't lead to just such a  dominance in female practicing dentists: in 2017/2018 there were 45% female and 55% male practicing dentists in Germany
